Over use of Java Script?
Common web
design mistakes include the over use of java
script or for that matter the use of jva script
at all.
Javs script is
probably the most exploited element that can
exist on a web page. For that reason, it is the
first thing people want to deactivate.
No one wants
to land on a page that makes 10 more pages pop up.
O for a page to send them to 20 different pages
one after another.
People install
software to prevent that, they disable javascript
in their browser to make surfing ore friendly.
If your pag
uses java script, especially in linking to other
pages, the site becomes useless. The user cannot
access other pages, cannot get to your menus,
does not even know that you have drop down menus
because they do not appear,
They click a
link, nothing happens, and they assume the page
does not work. And they are right, the pages does
not work.
People get
lured in by cool stuff. I need to have my link
light up when someone puts the mouse over it.
But is that
simple element worth losing customers?
You need to
build pages that work. Maybe they are not as
flashy. Maybe they do not light up and blink, but
people can use them. All people, not just the
people that have windows computers but also
people that have apple mac's and linux opeating
systems.
Have you
considered the imapct on your business of having
a web page?
Now, have you
considered the impact on your website is only
half of the people that get there can use it.
It makes your
business look like it does not know what it is
doing. It makes you look bad.
Don't be
greedy. Don't go for the flash, don't try to have
the ultimate website. Try to have a website that
ultimately works 100% f the time on 100% of the
browsers.
Weather you
are running a retail store or an online forum. If
people cannot use the pages, the site will never
have the potential that is possible.
People
litteraly shoot themselves in the foot, making
pages so fancy to have the look they want, not
realizing that less than 30% of the people that
get to it can see it.
There are no
rules in web design. But there are rules in
business. You make your business as visable as
possible.
Do the same
for your website.
