What is a Serach Engine?
Most people
think that a search engine searches the internet
for keyword matches. Although that is the desired
result it is not technically true.
Search engines
are more correctly labeled as an index. A
collection of presearched pages with classified
results ready to serve out as search results.
A search could
never really search the entire internet for
results in real time. It takes months and even
years to read all the pages and find relavent
results. The results are stored in an index and
delivered when requested.
For this
reason, it can often take up to a year before
your page is included in the search index.
We started our
own search engine but were severely underfinanced.
The $100million dollar mark that the big guys are
spending to get a comprehensive index was just a
few dollars beyond our budget. Although we were
able to set up a good quality search engine with
a few million sites we were far from being able
to index the entire internet.
