What is Web 2.0?
The
term Web 2.0 is an insulting buzz word that was
created by all the people who have been asleep
for the last 10 years then just woke up and
realized the web could be interactive.
Web 2.0 is a
term that tries to push the internet as some
newly fangled way of making the user an active
participant in a website.
The fact is,
it has always been that way. Millions of people
met in interactive chats, people were building
complex home pages on AOL 10 years before myspace
was even an idea. AOL had video upload groups and
way way more than any single website tagging
themselves as a 2.0 platform will ever reach. And
AOL was fending off the competition daily.
It was the
super duper interactive nature of sites like aol,
ebay and others that made the web grow at the
rate it did. The excitemet was not based on
static pages, it was based on more dynamic
content than is even available today.
It is
insulting to imply that all the sites of the past
did not match up to the programing of web 2.0.
The fact is totally the opposite is true. The new
web 2.0 sites are just a rehash of 10 year old
concepts. Social networking is an old idea and
the active social networks have colapsed. But
they offered the sky compared to a myspace or
facebook.
For young
programers to paste a label on themselves and
their projects to stand out from the people that
built the backbone of the internet is foolish.
The term is outlandish and stupid.
The term is
thrown around by everyone out of the know to make
it look like they do know. But we know they don't
know!
If someone is
yielding the "Web 2.0" buzz term, you
can be pretty sure they are hyping something that
falls way short in the way of technology.
Its a new word
for an old idea. It's a word that is used to
lable everything yet has no definitive definition.
The web 2.0
people need to wake up and realize they don't
have anything new. And in fact, they have not
even tapped the technology that has existed for
more than 20 years.
Maybe
webmaster 2.0 feels better about himself, but
unless his webpage 2.0 makes more money for his
clients, they wont be happy paying 2.0 times the
regular cost for the same service.
